Local Election Hustings – Your chance to meet candidates and ask questions about their policies and plans.

Choosing the best councillors is vital for the local community – the aim of this event is to help you make decisions about how to cast your votes.  Full details in the poster attached.

All eight candidates will give a brief summary of what they would bring to the role of councillor and the audience will then be invited to ask questions about local council issues. The event will be chaired by Professor David Stevenson of Queen Margaret University.  Please reserve your place at Local Election Hustings Tickets, Wed 20 Apr 2022 at 19:15 | Eventbrite.

You can submit questions in advance to [email protected] though we will still ask you to read out your question in person. There may also be opportunities to raise questions on the night.

Please aim to be seated by 7.15pm so that we start on time and the candidates can make their presentations without disturbance.

Please park in the upper car park if possible. This will allow us to prioritise spaces in the lower car park for people who need to be closer to the church.

Brown bins are for garden waste only

East Lothian Councils’s brown bin collection is specifically for garden waste. No compostable food or drink containers should be put in the brown bin. 

The treatment solution is local to East Lothian and is not the mechanical or engineered solution that is required to treat other compostable materials. Treating locally allows the collection vehicles to tip at the point of treatment and vastly reduces the carbon footprint.  The system used in East Lothian is to shred and compost in open windrows utilising screening and this works extremely well.  Equally, by controlling the input we reduce contaminants/pollutants and produce a high standard of product suitable for direct application in gardens and horticulture/agriculture. 

The label ‘Fully compostable’ has many meanings in relation to required treatments to compost but the vast majority require in-vessel or automated/engineered treatments to compost down.  Such containers also contain residues of food waste which changes the required treatment type, increasing contamination and reducing the output (compost) specification.

At present there is no affordable way to separately collect and treat such packaging and this needs further action nationally. Not everything that is compostable, is compostable, it seems.

East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership is investigating the impact that ageing will have on East Lothian’s population and how we can improve services for older people in the future. We want to ensure that everyone can give their views so please take the quick online questionnaire.

A lot of activity is being coordinated by the Edinburgh Ukranian Club and their facebook page has plenty of additional information.

If anyone would like to take their own donations, one of the main collection points is the Ukrainian Club in Edinburgh, 14 Royal Terrace. The Volunteers are there on Fridays 5-8pm.
