ELC Community Learning and Development Services has a number of community centres and community facilities across East Lothian. Each of the community centres has a programme of classes and activities for all ages. Some of our community centres have wifi and/ or public access computers. Our Community Training Calendar offers a range of short training courses open to all East Lothian volunteers and staff.

Numeracy and Literacy
Take the first step back into learning: Everyday Reading, Writing and Maths. We work closely with our partners to provide a first step back into learning for the many adults and young people who may have missed out on their own education, or who find they now need new and different skills for life today. We also offer support to people with dyslexia. We run groups across East Lothian for a couple of hours a week in an informal, learner centred environment. We offer limited 1:1 for learners not ready to start in a group

Messy Church
Every few months, we meet for an afternoon of Messy Church – a time for children of different ages and for their parents, grandparents and carers to come together, hear a Bible story and explore it through crafts, storytelling, music and lots of fun, before sharing a meal together.

Fiona Matheson Highland Dance School
The dance school is affiliated with the Scottish Highland Dancing Association (SOHDA) and is open to children aged 4yrs +. The timetable includes over 10 classes per week with classes in Tranent, Macmerry, Elphinstone, Prestonpans and Haddington. Classes range from babies and beginners level, to advanced competition classes and adult’s fitness classes. Dancers are encouraged to take part in performances, competitions and examinations, however these are not compulsory.

The Carriage House Quilters
Tuesdays 2 – 4.00pm.
Patchwork and quilting is undertaken on personal projects as well as shared projects for charity. Small quilts and knitted goods are made for the neo-natal unit at the Simpson maternity Unit in the RIE. Beginners are very welcome and are given all the help and support they need. There is a large social aspect to the afternoon and much is shared over tea and biscuits.

Saltoun Baby and Toddlers
We aim to provide a happy, relaxed atmosphere in a safe and stimulating environment where the children have free play with active adult involvement.
Saltoun Playgroup is located in East Saltoun Village Hall (Fletcher Hall), meets twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays), runs from 9.30am – 11.30am and is for children under the age of 5.

Gifford Bowling and Sports Club
Gifford Bowling Club dates back to the late 1800’s with the land it sits on donated by the Tweeddale family. In 2008, a new Clubhouse was built, which also saw the amalgamation of numerous sports groups in the village to create Gifford Bowling and Sports Club. The clubhouse now acts as a home for Bowling, Cricket, Junior Rugby and Junior Cricket. Many other groups in the village have also enjoyed the facilities as well as our many Social members.
